CHANGE THE NARRATIVE.
CHANGE THE WORLD.

At Counterstream Media we’re on a mission to center the stories and perspectives that mainstream media often miss.

We believe in the power of personal narratives to spark meaningful conversations and shift power from extractors to justice. Through our diverse and expansive media initiatives including podcasts, investigative journalism, and live storytelling events, we uplift voices and share stories that have long been sidelined and overlooked.

Our focus on Environmental Justice spotlights the connections between racial, social, and climate justice.

As the sole multicultural media platform of our kind, we’re proud to bring together community organizers, journalists, activists, and creatives to tell stories that reflect the diversity of human experiences — and we do so in a way that is nuanced, sensitive, and in-depth.

Counterstream Media was previously known as People over Plastic.

  • PEACE & RIOT ZINE

A quarterly digital zine: The place for our community to stay informed, inspired, and connected. Each issue contains powerful features and deep dives with voices of Environmental Justice leaders and community members.

  • PEOPLE OVER PLASTIC PODCAST

Our internationally recognized podcast is a safe space for activists, organizers, and innovators to hold unfiltered conversations about justice and sustainability — and who gets a seat at the table. Now in our fourth season.

  • THE MARGIN

An award-winning investigative journalism publication covering the intersections of social and Environmental Justice in the United States. Stay tuned for our upcoming special edition in collaboration with The Nation, releasing this summer.

  • SOLIDARITY RIDES

Inspired by ‘Freedom Rides’ from the 1960’s, Environmental Justice leaders ride together on a bus to collectivize power, celebrate and give back to the community. The goal of Solidarity Rides is to form lasting alliances and amplify solutions to achieve environmental justice wins.

At Counterstream, covering the intersections of race, Environmental Justice, and the climate crisis are the norm, not the exception.

Every contribution, however big or small, powers media for Environmental Justice.

“

Thank you so much for just being real, covering the real stories on the ground. You know, the real frontline people, telling our real stories.
